On January 19, 1922, James “Chris” Christopher was born in Stephens, Arkansas to Etta Todd and Robert Christopher. Chris made his transition into eternal life on July 30, 2020 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Texarkana, Texas.
Chris attended Hall School and became a member of Beech Hill A.M.E. Church during his earlier years. At an early age, Chris served in the U.S. Army as a Military Police. After retiring from the Army, he moved to Alameda, California where he was employed by the Naval Air Service for over 35 years. During this tenur, he was the recipient of United States Naval Air Station Certificate of Commendation in 1963; Length of Service Award for 30 years of Federal Service in 1973; and U. S. Naval Air Station Certificate for 35 years of Federal Service in 1978. He later moved to Oakland, California where he worked for the Hunt’s Cannery for many years and became a member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1984, Chris migrated back to Stephens, Arkansas to take care of his mother until her passing. He rejoined Beech Hill A.M.E. Church in Stephens where he served as President of the Trustee Board, Choir, and faithfully attended Bible Study, Sunday School, and Business Meetings. Chris was awarded Senior Citizen of the Year in 2016 by the Stephens Chamber of Commerce.
Chris was united in holy matrimony to Everlona Banks Christopher. One daughter, Joyce, was born to this union.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two (2) brothers, and one (1) sister. Remaining to cherish memories of Chris are: his daughter: Joyce (William) Cross of Fayetteville, GA; Granddaughter: Megan (Taylor) Dasher of Peach Tree City, GA; two sisters: Shirley Christopher Turner of Tarzan, CA and Flordene Christopher Mason of Sherman Oaks, CA; eight (8) nephews; five (5) nieces; a special cousin: Lurlene Wyrick; four special friends: Cora Sutton, Thomas Todd, Carl Todd, Prentice Huntley; and myriad other relatives and friends.
