Velma Jean Jones, lovingly called Lady, was born on December 25, 1941, to Mattie B and Gordy Morehead. Her education started at the Carver Elementary School in Stephens, and she graduated in 1961 from Carver High School. She continued her studies at the Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas.
She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. There, she served as Musician, Deaconess and on the Mission Board. She was there over 30 years. Later in life, she reunited with Antioch.
She married the love of her life Ernest Acie Lee Jones on March 24, 1963. To this union, three children were born. Velma's travels spanned the globe during her husband's military career.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Acie Jones, her parents, siblings: Nathaniel Powell, Odell Powell, Eward Morehead Sr., Necie Jean Davis, Isaiah Powell Jr., Ellen Jewell Lee, Atton Jewel Powell and Phillip Powell.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: Two sons: Ernest Sr. (Tonya) Jones and Anthony Sr. (Dana) Jones of Stephens, one daughter, Charnita Garland of Texarkana, siblings, John Lee Powell Sr., Jimmie Lee Powell Sr., Stanley Wayne Powell Sr., Mattie Mae Powell Waston, Calvin Powell Sr., Carolyn Powell Williams Poe, Marilyn Powell Poole, Edith Cornelius, Adella Powell and Jim Powell; nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at the Antioch Baptist Church in Stephens at 11AM. Rev. Calvin Powell will be the eulogist. Interment will be at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Stephens.
